The boys and I (Don) went to the 2008 Astronaut Lacy Veach Day of Discovery at Punahou School. The event honors a graduate of Punahou School who flew with NASA before passing away a few years ago. Corporate sponsors keep the hands-on event free to excite kids about science.
And man, were there a lot of kids there! Kudos to the organizers for setting up a well run day for a few hundred kids. Turns out the event is so popular the registration slots were full 36 hours after you could start filling them out online, and they had a long wait list. We feel very fortunate the homeschool network here put out the timely word so we had an opportunity to participate!
The boys got to hear an astronaut brief a recent mission to the space station, played with robotics displays, built a small fuel cell car, made and launched water-powered bottle rockets, and watched a humorous science demonstration about the uses of air pressure. A great day!
